THE BUILDING RULES and REGULATIONS

In England and Wales the law requires that solid fuel installations follow some simple rules about fire protection and The Chimney Effect laid out in the Building Regulations. Advice on how to meet the rules is given in the supplementary Document J which, though not compulsory, provides a pretty clear set of instructions outlining current best practice - this is the place to look to find out how a stove, fireplace or chimney should be installed. The same legal framework applies in the Republic of Ireland, but Scotland and Northern Ireland are slightly different.
